Description

Region

The Western Cape is roughly the size of Greece and is the fourth largest province in South Africa. A temperate southern coastline is fringed by mountains whilst the north meets up with the Karoo plateau. The west coast of the province is extremely dry and windy. Two oceans meet on its coast; the cool Atlantic on the west and the warm Indian Ocean on the south coast. The weather is perfect for growing grapes – rainfall measures up to 40 inches a year, the mild Mediterranean weather provides the perfect climate and the ground is mainly sandy and rough.

Hailing from the Western Cape, this Merlot is round and supple, full of juicy plums, cherries and blackberries. Complemented by a fresh acidity and soft tannins.

'Aromatic, fresh: why we LOVE a Picpoul!'

£17.00

Picpoul de Pinet is a wine produced in a small region behind the sand dunes of Sete on the Mediterranean coast. Ungrafted Piquepoul vines planted on chalky soils are kept cool and humid by the sea breeze. This Domaine is one of only four significant producers of Picpoul de Pinet alongside 20 or so tiny Domaines. Hidden behind a neglected concrete facade of the old winery lies an immaculate modern facility. This progressive winery manages a variety of domaines and styles, the `Trois Mats` is overseen by a New Zealand consultant winemaker.

'Great-value: a fresh, tasty and joyful white.'

£12.50

From the Western Cape in South Africa this wine is produced by Ellis wines and takes its name from the 18th century legend of the Flying Dutchman; a ship which was lost off the Cape of Good Hope in a storm.

'Easy drinking white, fab for a glug, great with supper'

£14.00

La Vigneau is sourced from mature Chardonnay vines near Narbonne planted in mineral rich soils and cooled by an oceanic micro-climate for this elegant Languedoc white.
