Description

Region

Alto Adige is in the north eastern corner of Italy, bordering Switzerland and Austria. Known as Sudtirol to the German-speaking two-thirds of its inhabitants, this region is well known for its wines and its beautiful scenery. Alto Adige is one of the smallest wine making areas in Italy, but it is also one of the most geographically varied; viticulture starts in the foot of the highest mountain in the north and extends down to the mediterranean landscape of the south.

Producer

Kellerei Kaltern Caldaro is a co-operative with approximately 440 members with a vineyard area of over 300 hectares. Due to steep slopes and varying sizes of individual vineyard plots, the vineyards are almost entirely worked by hand. Vineyards around Lake Kaltern are very small in size and most of the winemakers in the region have less than one hectare of land, for a small winemaker it is virtually impossible to make and market their own wine so the co-operative of Kaltern was set up in 1906 with the goal of producing high quality wines. In 2018, Kellerei Kaltern became the first Italian wine producer to be awarded Fair`n Green`s certificate for sustainable viticulture. Fair`n Green covers both environmental and social sustainability issues.

Tasting Notes

This Chardonnay is an extraordinarily well-loved white wine with a green-yellow colour and a delicately fruity nose. The palate has a lovely weight in the palate with notes of ripe pears, bruised apple and a subtle floral note, perfectly complemented by a fresh citurs acidity and a long, clean finish.

Food

Serve with Smoked Salmon or braised chicken, summer salads or seafood like calamari and grilled prawns.

'Aromatic, fresh: why we LOVE a Picpoul!'

£17.00

Picpoul de Pinet is a wine produced in a small region behind the sand dunes of Sete on the Mediterranean coast. Ungrafted Piquepoul vines planted on chalky soils are kept cool and humid by the sea breeze. This Domaine is one of only four significant producers of Picpoul de Pinet alongside 20 or so tiny Domaines. Hidden behind a neglected concrete facade of the old winery lies an immaculate modern facility. This progressive winery manages a variety of domaines and styles, the `Trois Mats` is overseen by a New Zealand consultant winemaker.

'Great-value: a fresh, tasty and joyful white.'

From the Western Cape in South Africa this wine is produced by Ellis wines and takes its name from the 18th century legend of the Flying Dutchman; a ship which was lost off the Cape of Good Hope in a storm.

'A fabulous fizz for the fridge door!'

Domaine Rosier was established in 1982 by Michel and Renza Rosier. Moving from their native Champagne to the Languedoc in order to set up their Domaine, they completely restructured the vineyard which had been planted entirely with Aramon vines. They replanted with Mauzac, Chardonnay, Chenin and Pinot Noir; the classic varieties of the region. Now son Nicolas has joined his father in the viticulture/winemaking side of the business. The wine is made using the Method Traditionelle which requires a secondary fermentation within the closed bottle to create a fine natural mousse. It also generates the rich yeasty lees flavours enjoyed in the best sparkling wines.
